On The Need For Expressing Ourselves

Do you ever wonder why we share what we think of? like, why do I want to write this article? why do I want to move my thoughts from my head to paper or on a note-taking app? isn’t it enough to just have them inside my brain?

Well, I’ve been asking these questions for the past few days, so I began to dig more about expressing onself.

We are creatures full of emotions and thoughts. I read that scientists recently showed that we can have up to 6000 thoughts in just one day! that means nearly 300 thoughts in an hour, and perhaps 5 thoughts every minute. In addition to the wide variety of emotions that we experience during a day, there’s no wonder in wanting to let go some of that burden -if not all of it..-

The Inside Out

Expression is the transition of feelings or thoughts from the inside to the outside, when there is a disproportion between the outward inactivity and our inner noise, it makes us feel like we’re suppressed, for this continual internal motion requires some external counterpart.

In this case, expressing ourselves comes as a necessity. Thoughts, feelings and emotions create this internal motion and generates a form of energy that gets trapped inside, therefore, it needs to be released. if it stays there, it’ll cause stress and discomfort. Those muted thoughts and feelings get accumulated inside , and with time, they form a huge pressure that eventually will explode at some point.

have you ever bursted into tears because of something trivial? been there, done that. it’s not because you or I are super sensitive people, but it’s just a trigger that made all what you kept inside finally gets out. think of it as the straw that broke the camel’s back.

That’s why it’s extremly important to keep balance between your inner self and the outer one. for your own sake.

You may think that you’re doing it for others, but it won’t be the case when you’re honest with yourself. it’s not about getting people’s attention as much it is about aleviating yourself from that burden. people’s reaction is just a buy-product that may vary from one to another.

you may also notice that it feels awkward at the beggining, because you’re able to actually see what’s been locked inside, in your heard, in the dark, for the first time. it will be new to you as much it is to others.

I believe that expressing ourselves is a work of art, whether it was painting, dancing, writing or any other way. because it’s something that is born from need, the things we want to express need to get out and display themselves in front of us, as something concrete in the outside world in oppose to be hidden inside in our inner world. and it doesn’t matter how good or bad we think it is, that’s not point. We can’t judge expressing ourselves or let people do so as much as we can’t judge someone for coughing or sneezing. maybe the only way one can evaluate it is by its authenticity; how much one have been able to truly show what he/she holds inside.

So, what you can take from this? here’s three key points:

  1. Be honest. Whether it was with yourself or with others.
  2. Don’t delay. You had a thought? immediately note it down. You’re sad? cry at the moment you feel sad, compose a piece of music that translates your emotion. You’re happy? be happy, dance like a fool. I don’t know just release that energy one way or another, you’ll thank youself later.
  3. Find your way. What helps you convey your thoughts/emotions better: is it painting? writing? whatever it is, do more of it.
